UNIX and LINUX is same or not?

“Your UNIX credentials will not work on this server, try with your SFR ID and Password.”

This is the exact word my senior told me when I was logging into the server and It ran into a question like why he told UNIX and not LINUX. I didn’t ask him because of work rush at that time but I googled ♥ later. And this is my understanding now.

But before that there are few questions:
1. UNIX and LINUX is same or not?
2. If Kernel is same then why UNIX and LINUX. Call it LINUX and end this discussion.
3. Can software developed for Unix run on Linux, and vice versa?

As per the Linux kernel official README file, Linux is a UNIX clone that is developed from scratch by Linus Torvalds and his team. It targets POSIX compliance. The Linux kernel code was completely written from scratch. It is designed in such a way so that it acts like Unix but it does not have the original Unix code in it. It is also significant to note that Linux is just the kernel and not the complete OS.

💥This Means that Linux is just kernel and what you (me too) consider OS is its distros. Haan, UNIX is OS for sure as everything (all required applications tied together) comes from a single vendor. For Example, Solaris, IBM AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Darwin, macOS X

A standard Linux distribution consists of a Linux kernel, GNU system, GNU utilities, libraries, compiler, additional software, documentation, a window system, a window manager, and a desktop environment.

Aur haan, in general, software developed for Unix can run on Linux, and vice versa. Both Unix and Linux share similar design principles and command-line interfaces, making them compatible in many cases. However, there may be some differences and incompatibilities between specific versions and distributions of Unix and Linux, requiring modifications or additional configuration.

Bonus Points :
1. In total, around 600 Linux distributions do exist.
2. Google’s popular Android mobile OS is based on Linux. Every iteration of the Android OS is built on the current Linux kernel.
